Vienna Coffeehouse Conversations

Social Dining: Vienna Beyond The Guidebooks

Spending some time in Vienna? Dine with a local and discover the city from the inside…

The Vienna Coffeehouse Conversations is a series of dinners with a small group of people. A traveller and a local sit down for a three-course meal with coffee, choosing from a menu of questions to ask each other. This means you will go beyond Schonbrunn Palace and Wiener Schnitzel to a deeper conversation with a Vienna resident about their perspective on the world. You and your partner will revive the spirit of debate in coffeehouses 100 years ago.

The events are in English and suitable for couples, small groups and single travellers. After an introduction from local arts group space and place, you'll be invited to sit down with someone and enjoy interesting Viennese food in a relaxed ambience. Recent local participants include artists, teachers and journalists, curious to meet visitors like you and learn about different views.

Questions range from ‘How important is money to you?’ to ‘Which parts of your life were a waste of time?’. Other questions explore travel, friendship, work and inspiration. They are not easy, and some encounters have led to long email exchanges, where the pair discussed the ideas presented. After dinner, join us for a chat involving the whole group, over a drink.

The Vienna Coffeehouse Conversations build on Oxford University professor Theodore Zeldin’s Conversation Meals, which have taken place as part of street festivals, in art galleries from London to Singapore, and at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Access the event calendar.

The events are supported by iconic Austrian coffee brand Julius Meinl ('Inspiring Poets Since 1862') and its delightful virtual Poetry Café.
