Vienna With Kids: What to Do With A Toddler. If you are like Sarah from England, you may be wondering what to do in Vienna with a small child. She wrote me this brief message: “Hi. Any ideas for keeping a 2 (nearly 3) year old happy? We arrive next Wednesday!” I thought I’d share my tips for her with you, see below.
“Hi Sarah, here is what we did with our kids in Vienna when they were toddlers, not long ago:
Schonbrunn Zoo: The zoo at Schonbrunn Palace is said to be Europe’s best zoo. It is set in wood land and has soft play elements throughout. Our favourite animals there are the rhinos, pandas, tigers and pelicans.
Vienna Prater amusement park: My kids loved the liliput ‘choo choo train’ that goes through the Prater’s lush woodlands. I think a three-year-old may also find the Giant Ferris Wheel quite fun. Another lovely thing to do for toddlers (and parents) a ride in the vintage First Vienna Pony Caroussel.
Childrens ZOOM Ocean at ZOOM Museum in Museumsquartier: ZOOM Ocean is a play area for children from eight months to 6 years. It is the best ‘museum’ for toddlers.
House of Music: You will love Haus der Musik as it’s both interesting for adults and children. Toddlers like the interactive music stations, and the ’embryo room’, featuring the sounds an embryo hears in the mother’s belly. Adults love the NAMADEUS muscial name game and (virtually) conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Haus des Meeres: Vienna’s acquarium is fun for small children and interesting for adults. It is located in a World War II air defence tower and boasts a rooftop cafe with amazing views of Vienna.
Sand In The City is one of the largest urban beaches (open in the summer months), located between Stadtpark and the Vienna Konzerthaus. Kids can play in the sand and use the playground. Every Fri, Sat and Sun there is ‘Little Pirate Fun and Action Day’, including onsite child care, face painting and building sand castles.
Playgrounds at parks and gardens: The best inner city playgrounds are those in Stadtpark and on Karlsplatz square. They use soft natural bark for the flooring and have a few fun play stations. Have a glass of amazing tonka bean milk and sweet dumplings at nearby Meierei im Stadtpark when you visit.
I hope this helps,
have fun in Vienna!
