Waldmüller (1793–1865), a pivotal Austrian painter from the Biedermeier period, made it his goal to paint “nature that surrounds us, our time, our customs.” His works are characterized by their attention to detail, naturalistic lighting, and realistic style of representation. To quote Waldmüller, “in order to attain radiant colour you have to paint in the sunlight”. These late works show dazzling, almost searing light, his figures seem positively bathed in light.

The 1.2-kilometer stretch between Mariahilfer Straße and Lerchenfelder Straße transforms into a riot of stalls, stories, aromas, and discoveries. More than just a flea market, it’s a neighborhood festival draped in vintage, curiosity, culture, and community. Visitors can also look forward to an extensive supporting program: music acts, dance performances, walking acts and dance workshops as well as a colorful children’s programme.
At the Flaniermarkt you can discover vintage clothing, antiques, handmade crafts, and collectibles.Vendors sell vintage accessories, fashion, antiques, and treasures from local stores along the street.
One of the loveliest bits: the integration of the local shops. Some boutiques along Neubaugasse open their doors, pull out racks and shelves, and join the street vibe. So amid the old books and vintage finds, you may stumble on a label from your favorite local designer, or handmade ceramics next to vintage finds. Street food aromas — Vienna sausages, Hungarian lángos, Asian street bites — snake through the lanes.

12. Take An Easy E-Bike Tour
Things to do in Vienna May 2026. The Kahlenberg is Vienna’s tallest hill, and this is the perfect place to get an overview of the city with panoramic views. Each weekend, Viennese flock to their ‘house mountains’ Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg. They are packed with lush vineyards, woods, panorama views, historic buildings and a good dozen of wineries. Equally popular is the Danube Island.
Equipped with an electric bike, make your way up the Kahlenberg with ease on your comfortable e-bike with extra thick tires. Follow the fortified walls of the Danube Canal to the top of the Kahlenberg, then continue downhill to the village of Nussdorf and onto the Danube Island, where you’ll have a unique view back towards the city.
I’m not a great biker but joined a similar tour. Since then I have become an e-bike fan. This easy e-bike tour is the best outdoor fun in the Vienna Woods and Danube Island . Read more.
13. Head For A Day To Salzburg
While you will enjoy the city of Salzburg whatever the season there are activities in the surroundings that are only open in the warmer months.
Just take the lake district, Salzkammergut, for example. Boat rides on its most famous lakes like Hallstätter See, Wolfgangsee or Attersee are mostly possible between mid April and October.
Likewise, a visit to the Giant Ice Caves at Werfen is only doable between May and October. Find out more about day trips from Vienna to Salzburg in Vienna Tours to Salzburg.
14. Visit The Danube Valley of Wachau
The Danube Valley of Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a boat ride from Spitz to Dürnstein was one of the first trips I took my husband on to show him the best of my home country. This well conceptualised tour covers all that we had seen.
The highlight is definitely the extended boat ride from Spitz to Melk, and the fantastic baroque abbey of Melk which towers over the Danube. Many villages and towns like Krems date back to the Middle Ages (1305), boasting houses with coats of arms and metre-thick walls, big city gates and watchtowers.

15. Bratislava By Boat
Many readers ask me about my thoughts on a boatride on the Vienna Danube… and I always come up with Bratislava. The stretch of the Danube between these two cities is picturesque and green. I travelled from Central Vienna in just over an hour by high speed catamaran and had the whole day to see a gem of a European capital. You can find the full story and travel details in my review of our mini Danube cruise.
