If you like boutique hotels Vienna is a good spot. The best small places to stay are in and just around the city center. A good Vienna boutique hotel marries local charms with extras that make your stay special. Here are my top seven.
Why stay? The Hotel Hollman Beletage is one of the quirkiest of design hotels in Vienna. The small boutique space rests in a quiet area in Vienna’s old city centre. It feels like a home rather than a hotel, has a lovely small outdoor terrace, sauna and open fire place. My favourites are the living room, which is full of great coffeetable books, and Hollmann’s private cinema. Good to know that Wi-Fi is free.

Why is it a good choice among boutique hotels Vienna? The Guesthouse sits in an enviably central location for a Vienna boutique hotel, two minutes from Kärntnerstrasse, boulevard, the Vienna State Opera, and the Albertina museum. The interiors boast the best of Viennese modernism in perfectly elegant style. You will see a fair share of locals in its popular brasserie and in-house bakery. This is a great place for design and fresh bread lovers on a city break.

Why it’s a good choice among the best boutique hotels in Vienna: Schreiner’s restaurant and hotel is the cherished jewel of husband and wife team Thomas and Angela. The refurbished townhouse in Vienna’s central neighbourhood Neubau is in the middle of town yet a tranquil and authentic Viennese inn. The rooms are large, breakfast tasty and the green courtyard out of this world. My tip: try to book the separate Biedermeier Salettl pavilion (photo).

Why is it among the best boutique hotels Vienna? The Topazz is the cosiest jewelry box I know. If you love art deco and an energy-friendly place, you will not want to leave. The hotel facade with its oval-shaped windows is impressive. The first time I entered I would just sit in the lobby and feel good. The window seats in each room are second to none. The food is as sustainable as the building: regional, organic, and mostly seasonal.

Why is it a good choice among boutique hotels Vienna? Do you think contemporary art should get a fair share in your citybreak? Das Tyrol may save you a trip to a modern art gallery. Its owner has lovingly decorated it with paintings and objects from contemporary Viennese and international artists. For travellers who want to complete old-world sightseeing with a modern update, this place fills a gap. Go for the light therapy shower, sauna and steam bath during long winter nights.

Why is it among the best boutique hotels in Vienna? Experience a pioneering hotel concept while diving right into city life. Urbanauts Street Lofts are located in original abandoned street shops in central locations. Their urban relaxed chic has been concocted by a trio of young local architects who also run the hotel. The usual hotel services are embedded in the local neighbourhood – breakfast in selected nearby cafes, wellness at the hammam around the corner, though not included in the standard hotel price. What is part of the package are two bikes, multimedia, internet, minibar, coffee bar, a mini grocery package and a few more goodies.

Why is it a good choice among boutique hotels Vienna? Parkvilla is a beautiful 19th century mansion in Vienna’s prime villa paradise. The renovated art nouveau villa is the best spot to experience residential living in a green leafy suburb. In the summer, you have breakfast in the garden. Visitors love it because the service is great, the settings tranquil and city center connections excellent. The local bus will take you to the city center in 15 minutes. Parkvilla’s owners offer private airport pick up service.
