Things To Do In Vienna March 2024: The Top 8

Things to do in Vienna March 2024. What should I do in Vienna in March? The start of spring leads to all sorts of cultural mushrooming in Vienna. Learn more about the best concerts, a secret courtyards tour, a Vienna Woods tour and more.

1. Easter in Vienna: Best  Easter Markets

Things to do in Vienna April: Easter market SchonbrunnThings to do in Vienna April 2024. The most colourful way to celebrate Easter in Vienna is to attend its seasonal markets: see painted eggs and Easter decoration from Austria and neighbouring countries, Europe’s biggest egg pile (Easter Market Freyung) and snack on Austrian regional specialities.

Clearly, the Easter markets on Freyung and adjacent Am Hof focus on traditional arts and crafts and regional delicatessen. Among others you will likely find Ingrid Trabesinger, the lavender lady, local ceramics and leatherware, natural soaps, and Austrian egg liquors and dirndl liquors, in addition to stalls selling gingerbread and cold meats.

At Schönbrunn’ Palace’s easter market handmade felt chickens and bunnies compete with colorful decorative eggs, fresh spring wreaths, glass, wood, straw, pewter, as well as beautiful regional ceramics, along with wooden toys. Among my favourite stalls are Frau Fleissig’s baking mixtures for apple strudel and gugelhupf, and the creative rolling pins of LANG ZEIT. At certain times, jazz and swing groups add some music to the scenery.

Dates: 15th March to 1st April 2024 (Am Hof and Freyung); 16th March to 2nd April 2024 (Schönbrunn Palace);
Locations: Schönbrunn Palace (front); Freyung (city centre); Am Hof (city centre, 5 min from Freyung)
Admission: free

2. Easter Sunday: Vienna Boys Choir

things to do in Vienna April: Vienna Boys ChoirThings to do in Vienna April 2024. On Easter Sunday the Vienna Boys choir’s will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s majestic and jubilant Coronation Mass (in C Major KV 317).

Showcasing Mozart’s mastery in choral writing the soloists, choir, and orchestra intricately weave together rich textures and harmonies. In particular, the Vienna Boys Choir’s choral movements shine due to their brilliance and expressive power. Like at the traditional Sunday Masses, the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle will support the choir boys.

Location: Wiener Hofburgkapelle (Imperial Chapel)

3. Discover Secret Historic Courtyards

Courtyard of Deutschordenshaus in ViennaThings to do in Vienna March 2024When icy winds stop slapping your face a secret courtyards tour becomes attractive again. In fact, my home city boasts more than a dozen historic courtyards, called Pawlatschen.

Known for their delicate wooden galleries and open verandas these traditional courtyards were common during the Biedermeier period of 19th-century Vienna. While hidden from the street, the Pawlatschen provided much loved communal spaces where residents could socialize and engage in various activities. The term stems from the Czech word pawlace, meaning gallery or porch.

As an example, this photo shows the romantic courtyard of Deutschordenshaus.

What is almost more secret than their locations are the stories around them. To hear them, join a secret Vienna tour, or alternatively explore those courtyards on your own during a self guided courtyards walk.

4. Watch an Opera or Ballet

Things to do in Vienna March: State OperaThings to do in Vienna March 2024. Almost each month the Wiener Staatsoper stages a different Mozart opera. In March, The Abduction from the Seraglio will keep you laughing out loud while listening to some of Mozart’s most popular tunes: Follow the daring rescue mission of count Belmonte to save his beloved Konstanze and her maid from the Turkish harem. Above all the plot explores the themes of love, loyalty, and cultural clashes.

In a similar way, Richard Strauss’ The Knight of the Rose (Der Rosenkavalier) promises romantic and comic entertainment. Set in 18th-century Vienna the story revolves around the complex love affairs and social intricacies of the Marschallin, her young lover Octavian, and the charming but naive Baron Ochs.

Other than that, Verdi’s La Traviata and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin entertain more serious tones as romantic and historic dramas unfold on stage.

Location: Wiener Staatsoper, Opernring 2, 1010 Vienna
Date: various throughout March 2024

5. Explore Austria’s Star Architect

Things to do in Vienna March 2024. From Schönbrunn Palace and the Austrian National Library to baroque church St. Charles Borromeo: Most visitors will eventually come across the works of Austria’s most famous historic architect.

Throughout March and into April the newly opened Vienna Museum will focus its first special exhibition on architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656–1723). Fischer’s work as an architect ranges from garden and city palaces for the Viennese nobility to church buildings for the Archbishop of Salzburg and the large imperial monuments in Vienna. His buildings referred to antiquity and yet were unmistakably modern – thus meeting contemporary ideas of stately representation, for which tradition and history played a central role. A large number of objects – drawings, prints, models, paintings, sculptures, books – illustrate his extraordinary artistic work.

After your visit to the exhibition, why not step into landmark Karlskirche (church St. Charles Borromeo) right next?

Location: Wien Museum, Karlsplatz 8, 1040 Vienna
Date: 1st February to 28th April 2024
Tickets: free admission

These are just some examples out of 30 excellent concerts at Wiener Konzerthaus, Wiener Musikverein, and Museumsquartier this month. 8. Go For  Wine Tasting In Vienna

Viennese wine cellarThings to do in Vienna March 2024. Over the past years, the rich and diverse Austrian wines have been gaining international recognition for their quality and distinct character. Dating back centuries, Vienna boasts a long winemaking tradition of white and red wines, including the famous Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Blaufränkisch.

Throughout the city Vienna boasts historic wine cellars, some dating back centuries, where you can explore its winemaking history while tasting wines. Among the most famous is the stunning wine cellar of Palais Coburg, which houses a luxury hotel though has a limited offer of regular wine tastings.
