When you learn German, it will widen your travel experience in Europe (German is spoken by 100 million people there) and possibly your social and professional life.

This page is dedicated to my Portuguese husband. After a decade of being together with me, he has secretly picked up a lot of German words and phrases, has an incredibly cute Viennese accent and is about to thwart any confidential German conversation with my daughter. There are a few online language training communities that facilitate learning German for free. All you need to do in exchange for using the community resources is to help out other students who study your own native language. I signed up for a few to test them. Learn German: Seven Reasons

If you are unsure about learning German, here are seven reasons for you to get familiar with the German language

1. Congrats: As an English speaker you already have a head start. German, together with Dutch, is the language closest to English, as they share the same Germanic language roots.
2. Succeed off the beaten track: not everyone at authentic local places in Vienna or other German speaking places speaks or understands English. Take your language guide and mingle with the natives!
