4. Put Your Ear On The Ground
Things to do in Vienna September 2026. Vienna’s transformation into the world’s music capital resulted from a unique convergence of political, economic, cultural, and social factors that created the perfect environment for musical genius to flourish. During the Classical Period, the city became home to an extraordinary concentration of musical genius: Mozart moved to Vienna in 1781, Haydn worked for Viennese aristocrats, Beethoven arrived in 1792, and Schubert was born there in 1797.
If you love the tunes of Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert why not put their music into context when in Vienna? Since the Habsburg Emperors loved music and used it as an instrument of power, music pervaded almost all aspects of life.
To better understand the Capital of Music I joined a trained musician and private guide on an in-depth tour through the city. Actually, we spent a good time talking not just history but about his insight into Vienna’s classical music scene today. Find out what the tour was like in Music Tour Vienna.
5. New Opera Season
Things to do in Vienna September 2026.Vienna’s opera life revolves around four stages. The Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) on the Ringstrasse anchors the city with a vast repertoire — over 50 different operas and ballets per season including Wagner, Verdi, Puccini and Mozart. As the natural home of operetta, the Vienna Volksoper is where Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus opened the current season and Lehár sits comfortably alongside popular opera. If you lean towards rarities and period performances, visit the Theater an der Wien; while the intimate Kammeroper champions young singers and lesser-known works.
The 2026/27 season programme is expected to be published in spring 2026, with tickets going on sale from late April. Use my favourite Vienna opera, operetta and ballet calendar for updates on ticket sales.
6. Spend A Day In Wachau Valley
Things to do in Vienna September 2026. September is an excellent month to visit the Wachau Valley, an hour west of Vienna by train. The valley — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of vineyard terraces, Baroque monasteries and riverside villages — is at its most rewarding at harvest time, when the Riesling and Grüner Veltliner grapes are being picked. The Wachau Marathon on 13 September 2026 draws runners through the valley’s most scenic stretches while the Starnacht aus der Wachau on 19–20 September in Rossatz brings an outdoor music event to the riverbank. The traditional Erntedankfest harvest thanksgiving on 20 September in Weißenkirchen — with a costumed procession and parish fair in the historic Teisenhoferhof courtyard — gives a genuine flavour of local life. Expect village wine taverns open late, cellar-door tastings, and apricot produce everywhere.

8. Listen To Cathedral Concerts
Things to do in Vienna September 2025. Why concerts in a church? Actualy, before concert halls became THE thing, composers like Mozart performed at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Why? As a massive Gothic cathedral dating back to the 12th-14th centuries, St. Stephen’s possesses the characteristic acoustic properties of such architectural marvels. In a large gothic cathedral, the sound takes a long time to die away, sometimes up to 9 seconds! This extended reverberation time allows musical notes to blend and sustain, creating the ethereal, enveloping sound experience Gothic cathedrals are famous for.
Consider taking in Stephansdom’s art and architecture while classical music washes around its pillars, statues, paintings and altars.
